A rescue dog will officially live in the White House today. Major, a German Shepherd, is the first canine adopted from an animal shelter to take up residence with the First Family.

While Major is the first shelter dog to live with a sitting U.S. president, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s dog Yuki was found by his daughter Luci at a gas station in 1966. She later gave Yuki to her father as a gift.

Major raised over $200,000 for the Delaware Humane Association during his “indoguration.”

What a great moment for shelter dogs.
