Michigan Humane Adoption Process

Adopt a Pet from Michigan Humane

At Michigan Humane, one of our greatest joys is placing a new pet with a loving family. Learn more about how we can help you find your best match below!

Please Note: Adopters must be 18 years or older.

Meet our adoptable pets.

Browse our adoptable pets online, or visit one of our adoption centers in Detroit, Howell or Westland, or our offsite adoption partners at the Sterling Heights Petco and select Premier Pet Supply locations. For pets listed online, you may call 866-MHUMANE for more information.

What to bring with you:

  • Driver’s license (or State of Michigan ID card) with current address.
  • Michigan Humane prefers (and in some cases requires) that all members of the household meet and are comfortable with the pet.
  • Any canine family members: Michigan Humane prefers (and in some cases requires) dog-to-dog meetings between your current dog(s) and potential new canine family members.

Meet with an adoption counselor.
Our trained adoption counselors will meet with you to ensure the pet is a good fit for your home, family and lifestyle. They will review the pet’s medical history and their personality so this is a great time to ask any questions you may have. Then, you can spend time with the animal or animals you are interested in.

Complete the adoption.

Please allow an hour for the entire adoption process to be completed. You’ll be provided with a copy of your new pet’s medical history and any additional paperwork necessary to get you off on the right foot.

You’ll also receive information on your pet’s microchip and follow up veterinary care.

Payment types accepted: Cash, Check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover.

Once the adoption process is completed, a dog, cat or rabbit who is already spayed or neutered will go home with you the same day. Otherwise, the pet will be sterilized (normally scheduled for the next non-holiday weekday) at our on-site veterinary center before going home.

Out of state adoptions: Michigan Humane will adopt to out of state residents who travel to our adoption centers to complete the adoption process, including the spaying and neutering of intact animals. Please call the adoption center in advance for information on our hold policy. For health and safety reasons, we are not able to ship animals.
