13 year old Nala was adopted by a local teacher after his elderly father’s dog had passed away. He says his dad tells him every day that Nala is the best dog ever!

At MHS, we don’t discriminate based on age. No matter how old, if an animal is still comfortable and enjoying life, they deserve to find a forever home. In fact, we think most people deserve to discover the perks of adopting a senior pet. Adopting a pet as an adult is great – they are often calmer than puppies and past the chewing/peeing/jumping stage. And generally, what you see is what you get – their personality is pretty set by the time they are older.

It seems the “secret” of how great senior and adult adoptions are is out! At MHS, from December 7 to January 7, 79 animals were adopted that were six years or older. Of those 79, 13 were 10 years or older! Puppies and kittens may be cute, but people are realizing how great it can be to bring an adult or senior pet into their home, and we want everyone else to realize it to.

Have you adopted a senior pet? We’d love for you to share your stories so others can be inspired to adopt an older pet themselves.
