The Michigan Humane Society is celebrating one year since the MHS for Military program was launched in June of 2018. The program, sponsored by Sellers Subaru, waives adoption fees for all veterans and active military personnel. In addition to the waived adoption fee, other services are also included for free, such as spaying or neutering, microchipping, age-appropriate vaccinations, and de-worming. MHS for Military is available all year round, at any of our locations, and is not limited to any specific type of animal. Adopters just need to present proof of military service via military designation on their state/federal ID or their DD 214 form.

MHS is proud to offer this program as a ‘thank you’ to veterans and active-duty members of the armed forces for serving our country. Our men and women in uniform sacrifice so much to protect our country, so it warms our hearts when we hear about veterans finding a new forever family member through this program. For example, army veteran Kyle W. adopted Lupie and shared this adorable photo of Lupie.
Since adopting Lupie, Kyle has expressed that she has brought so much joy into his home and is a fantastic dog.

Lupie the dog adopted by a military veteran.

“She has allowed me to smile more, and I have come to miss her when I am not home. This is the first time I have adopted a dog since I have left the service and it has done wonders for me emotionally,” he says. “She has fit in wonderfully with our small family. She fell in love instantly with our cat (Harmony). I am very grateful for this program that is offered by the Michigan Humane Society, and I believe it can help service-members tremendously.”

Annette B., a retired and disabled navy veteran, adopted Miss Lucy after the passing of her beloved 15-year-old dog. Annette notes, “a friend told me about an adorable litter of puppies at the humane society, and that there was a program that waved the adoption fee for military veterans. I went with my son to the humane society, and it was love at first sight.”

At the Michigan Humane Soceity, we hope to connect more veterans and animals that need a loving new home! If you or someone you know are active-duty military personnel or a veteran, please visit our MHS for Military page.
