Meet Our Staff
Dr. Brandon Berkshire, DVM
A graduate of Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine (Class of 2015), Dr. Berkshire joined Michigan Humane shortly after graduating. He was based in our Rochester Hills clinic until 2019, then he became the lead veterinarian at our Livingston County veterinary center in Howell and has since returned to Rochester Hills as the Facility Medical Director. Dr. Berkshire’s fields of interest include orthopedics, neurology, behavior and surgery. He has four cats, a German Shepherd and a rabbit.
Dr. Kelly McSorley
Dr. McSorley is a Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine graduate. She has been a Veterinarian in Rochester Hills since her graduation in 2014. Dr. McSorley enjoys surgery as well as dermatology cases. Her hobbies outside of work include gardening, cross-country skiing, kayaking, and spending time with her three-legged cat named Cake.
Dr. Teagan Hasler, DVM
Dr. Teagan Hasler is a recent graduate from Washington State University and moved cross country to join Michigan Humane’s team. She was born and raised in Arizona and is looking forward to having real seasons here in Michigan! She has two dogs, two cats, a rescue horse and usually a foster pet. Veterinary interests include behavior and dentistry. Outside of work, Dr Hasler rides and trains her horse, hikes and is starting photography again.
Dr. Alexa Hollingsworth, DVM
A graduate of Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine (Class of 2019), Dr. Hollingsworth has recently joined Michigan Humane! She has practiced in Arizona and Colorado before arriving to Michigan. Dr. Hollingsworth enjoys the variety of cases veterinary medicine has to offer but especially enjoys surgery and shelter medicine. Dr. Hollingsworth spends most of her free time with her three dogs- Leticia, Beyla, and Jake and family. She also enjoys hiking, snowboarding, and fly fishing!
Dr. Katie Rigby, DVM
Dr. Rigby graduated from Michigan State University and was part of the inaugural MH Summer Students program. Currently she is a part time veterinarian in the Rochester Hills clinic. Outside of the clinic she loves to explore hiking trails with her two rescue pitbulls, cuddle with her cats and garden. Her professional interests include emergency medicine, surgery, behavior, and the growing field of veterinary forensics.

Dr. Jennifer Thomas, DVM
A graduate of Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Thomas has been on staff with Michigan Humane twice- once right out of school, and then again when she joined our Detroit team 4 years ago. She has a house full of Michigan Humane alumni, including a Great Dane adopted from our Detroit shelter. When she is not treating animals, Dr. Thomas enjoys gardening, bird watching and watching college/professional sports.
Dr. Kathe Freiberger, DVM
Dr. Freiberger is a Spartan squared: she attended Michigan State University for her undergraduate degree in Genetics, as well as to obtain her degree in Veterinary Medicine. She volunteered for an animal shelter throughout high school and college therefore it was only natural she ended up working for one. Dr. Freiberger’s interests outside of work include dancing with her husband, spending time with her two silly dogs, and playing soccer.
Dr. Jennie Nguyen, DVM
Dr. Nguyen originally started at Michigan Humane as a shelter medicine intern during her third year of veterinary school. Now, as a new graduate of the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine (Class of 2021), Dr. Nguyen is beyond thrilled to return to Michigan Humane to start the next chapter of her veterinary career! She is especially interested in shelter medicine and non-profit work, and is passionate about providing better access to veterinary care for individuals and communities in need. When not at work, Dr. Nguyen enjoys spending time with her long-legged Chihuahua mix, Sydney, listening to music, reading non-fiction books, cooking vegan meals, practicing yoga, and spending time in nature.
Dr. Sara Lindo, DVM
Dr. Lindo is a graduate of the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine c/o 2021. She was originally trained as an illustrator and cartoonist; but decided to switch careers after falling in love with animal sheltering while volunteering with a feline rescue group in New York City. Dr. Lindo was part of Michigan Humane’s inaugural Summer Internship program in 2019 as a veterinary student and couldn’t wait to come back to Detroit for more! She has a passion for shelter medicine, surgery, community care/access to care, behavior medicine, and emergency medicine. And, of course, cats. All kinds of cats. Even the spicy ones. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her spouse and 2 rescue cats Ike and PJ, restoring their 1927 home, enjoying movies and music, and traveling to sample all the best beers around.

Dr. Avery Brown, DVM
A new member to the Michigan Humane team, Dr. Brown graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and has a special interest in dermatology and internal medicine. Dr. Brown grew up in Michigan and has wanted to become a veterinarian since she was 8 years old. She shares her home with a loving Catahoula mix, and spends her free time crafting, hiking, playing video games and being involved at church.
Dr. Janeea Wright, DVM
Dr. Wright joined the Michigan Humane team recently, and has already made her mark! A graduate of the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, she comes to us with experience in private practice along with an interest in cardiology and dedication to compassionate care. When not working with clients, Dr. Wright spends time with her two rescues, plays sports, dances and enjoys the opportunity to spend time with family.
Dr. Kaitlin Steffes
Dr. Kaitlin Steffes is a Southeast Michigan native, growing up in Algonac. She is a 2017 graduate of MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. Her trusty sidekicks are two poodle mixes named Cali and Riley. Dr. Steffes also adopted an ex-thoroughbred racehorse named Hoagy and spends a lot of time horseback riding. She enjoys the variety of interesting cases that general practice has to offer, but especially enjoy ophthalmology and soft tissue surgery. Dr. Steffes’ hobbies include cheering for Spartan athletic teams (GO GREEN!), boating on Lake St. Clair, exploring new cuisine and culture, and enjoying the great outdoors with her four-legged companions.
