Holidays are a wonderful time to gather with friends and family, eat delicious food, laugh, and make memories. This can be an unusual time for our pets, however, due to the increased activity in the home. Dogs and cats that are typically social with people and other animals may show signs of stress simply because of all the noises and movement going on in and around the home.
It is imperative to give your pet a safe space to retreat to while activities are going on. This is the best way to advocate for your pet when they may be feeling overwhelmed.
Dogs should have a designated quiet room, or a crate placed in a quiet area, away from all the commotion. It is important that this is an area just for them, and they have access to it throughout the gathering and away from guests. This room or area may have dim lighting, soft music playing, and/or aromatherapy (lavender, vanilla, or frankincense are some of my personal favorites) When guests start to filter in, if your dog is showing increased signs of stress including heavy panting, pacing, barking, increased arousal, or fearful behaviors like moving away, hiding or trembling, it may be time to offer them a high value, long-lasting item away from all the activities.
Cats have the incredible ability to run and hide when the party gets started, but it may be beneficial for them to also have a separate room in a quiet area of the house, complete with food, water and a litterbox, to keep them comfortable for the evening. Even if your dog and cat get along, it may be best to offer them separate areas to decompress. Dim lights and soft music are recommended.
Be sure to keep an eye on the door when guests are coming and going. For the opportunist pet, this may be their chance to try and slip out! Make sure your pets have an ID tag and a microchip with up-to-date information. If you anticipate any escape artists, it may be best to place them in their quiet room with their favorite toy or special item until things settle down.
The day after a holiday gathering is the perfect time to give your dog or cats some extra love and attention. Yes, there is cleaning to do, but take a break and give your dog or cat your 100% attention for just 15 extra minutes. This will strengthen the human-animal bond, and give you a little time away from post-holiday chores.
