On July 3, the Michigan Humane’s Detroit Pet Pantry on Trumbull was officially renamed “The Judith Caplan Phillips Pet Pantry” after Ralph Caplan’s late sister, Judith Caplan Phillips. The Pet Pantry has provided free pet food and supplies to low-income families of Detroit for many years through generous donations from the community. Ralph has been an MHS supporter for nearly three decades and is passionate about the Pet Pantry Program and the impact it has on low-income pet owners. Additionally, he has supported the Purrfect Bow Wow Brunch, the Cruelty Investigation team, and medical equipment for our shelter clinics.

Ralph grew up in Detroit near the Pet Pantry and witnessed the economic difficulties and riots at that time which shaped his social conscience. His late sister Judith was also an animal lover and animal welfare supporter. Her educational accomplishments were remarkable, to name a few, she had a masters in Zoology, Genetics, as well as a law degree. In honor of Judith, Ralph is dedicating his support to fund the Judith Caplan Phillips Pet Pantry to help more struggling families feed their four-legged family members.

“There is always a need that exists, and as much as people are empathetic towards food pantries for people, they should also think about the impact poverty has on animals. Food pantries for animals can help keep animals in the home and out of shelters because unfortunately, in these situations that can be the end result.” Ralph says.

All of us at MHS, including Ralph, strongly believe that no one should have to choose between feeding themselves or feeding their pets during economic hardships. That is why it is very important to spread more awareness and to act on assisting low-income pet owners in need. We are incredibly grateful to Ralph, and to all of our generous supporters who feel that their pets are family and go that extra mile to help animals in need.
