Be aware of the risks

The majority of canine companions deserve the reputation of "man's best friend." Yet, in the United States, more than 4.7 million dog bites occur annually, with approximately 60% of all dog bite victims being children*.

Proper pet training and socialization is a key ingredient in ensuring public safety, along with the close supervision of pets around children. With children especially, given their natural inclination to enthusiastically approach and play with animals, another key factor is teaching them how to safely approach a familiar or unknown dog and what to do if they are approached by a dog.

The Michigan Humane Society offers free classroom and in-shelter presentations about safety and respect for animals.
