If you are interested in adopting a new pet from the Michigan Humane Society please read through the adoption process below. Somebody Here Needs You.

Adopters must be 18 years or older. |

Find an adoptable animal. Browse adoptable pets online, or visit one of MHS's five adoption centers in Detroit, Rochester Hills, Westland, or Taylor during adoption hours. For animals listed online, you may call the adoption center directly for more information.
When you visit an adoption center, please bring:
- Driver’s license (or State of Michigan ID card) with current address.
- If renting: a copy of your lease that includes pet information or a letter from the property owner on PO's letterhead.
- Veterinary records for any current pets or pets owned in the last five (5) years or provide vet's phone number.
- All members of your household: MHS prefers (and in some cases requires) that all members of the household meet and are comfortable with the animal.
- Any current canine family members: MHS prefers (and in some cases requires) dog-to-dog meetings between your current dog(s) and potential new canine family members.

Meet with an MHS adoption counselor. Our trained adoption counselors will meet with you to ensure the animal is a good fit for your family, lifestyle, etc. This is a great time to ask any questions you may have. Then, you can spend time with the animal.

Complete an adoption application. Please allow an hour or more for the adoption process. Save time by downloading a Preliminary Adoption Form online.

Ask about our adoption package. Services such as microchip implantation ($10 discount at time of adoption for dogs and cats) or feline leukemia testing.
Payment accepted: Cash, Check, Visa, MasterCard or Discover.
Once the adoption process is completed. An animal who is already spayed or neutered can go home with you the same day. Otherwise, the animal will be sterilized (normally scheduled for the next non-holiday weekday) at our on-site veterinary center before going home.
