Other Ways Kids Can Help the Animals

There are many ways for individual children as well as student, scout and other groups to get involved and help the animals cared for by the Michigan Humane Society at our three locations in Detroit, Rochester Hills and Westland.  Here are some ideas, but feel free to think of your own!

Craft Projects Fundraisers How to Donate

Craft Projects:

Recyclable Paper Rolls
Read how to make and utilize paper towel tubes, wrapping paper and TP tubes that benefit the animals in the adoption centers.

Kitty Forts for Cats and Kittens

Kitty Forts for Cats and Kittens
Kitty forts make a great craft project for school or scout groups, family get-togethers or a birthday or holiday activity.  Kitty forts help keep the cats and kittens happy and alleviate stress while they await new, loving homes.  They’re bright and colorful, and made from simple cardboard boxes.

Cage Covers for Dogs, Cats, Puppies and Kittens
If you have sewing skills, we need your help!  Using fabric cage covers helps alleviate stress and minimize illness for some of the dogs and kitties in our care.  They also add a decorative and home-like touch. >>>

Shoe Boxes
Shoe boxes that do not have any color base, in other words, natural cardboard color can be used for the rodents that are up for adoption.  They love to hide in them and sometimes chew them up.  So if you would like to donate your natural colored shoe boxes you will make some small critters very happy.

Toys for Cats
Catnip Toys - Cats love the sound of crinkly Mylar!  To make an irresistible catnip toy, simply sew the Mylar inside a piece of material along with a small amount of catnip.

Bandanas for Dogs and Cats
Cut material into various sized triangles to make festive, colorful bandanas for dogs and cats.  All sizes are welcome at our Centers for Animal Care.

Fundraisers:

Organize a Walk-a-thon
Organize a walk-a-thon at your school (with advance permission) or participate in the Michigan Humane Society’s annual Mega March for Animals in the late summer/early fall.  To hold a walk-a-thon, simply invite others to participate in collecting donations from friends and family, and walk on the event day!

Hold a Wish List Drive
Click on MHS’ current Wish List to find out what supplies are needed by our three adoption centers and hold a wish list drive to collect those items.  Advertise at your school (with permission) or in your neighborhood and find a designated area to collect items.  Get a few representatives to take the supplies to the nearest MHS Center for Animal Care and see the animals who will benefit from your hard work.  You can also do specific drives such as a blanket and towel or food drive.

Hold a Pop Can or Coin Drive
Hold a pop can or coin drive with a clever name such as Cans for Cats, Pop Cans for Pets, Pennies for Pets, Dimes for Dogs or Cash for Cats.  Place canisters in your classroom to collect money for the animals.  You can also hold car washes, bake sales or other events to raise money for the animals.

Battle of the Bands/Dances
Coordinate a Battle of the Bands, school dance (with permission) or other function and sell tickets with the proceeds to benefit the Michigan Humane Society.
