“ON CALL” ANIMAL CARE TECHNICIANS (ACTS) - PART TIME
Location: Westland
The Michigan Humane Society has immediate openings for part time “on call” Animal Care Technicians (ACTs) at its Berman Center for Animal Care in Westland, MI. At MHS, Animal Care Technicians represent the organization’s primary resource in caring for and transforming the lives of animals in need.

These unique positions will offer qualified individuals the ability to help MHS positively impact animal lives and our surrounding communities within a structure similar in design to substitute teaching. It is ideal for candidates seeking non-full time employment and a flexible schedule. The hours for this position will range from 0-24 hours per week depending on current scheduling needs and the employee’s availability. “On-call” ACTs will be notified of their schedule as the need arises and same day requests for coverage will be the norm.

Responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to, providing direct care and maintenance for all animals in the shelter, including feeding, and cleaning of the kennels, as well as all shelter areas and washing dishes and laundry.  The ACT will also need to observe animals for signs of illness and behavior problems, and bathe and groom animals as requested. Some data entry may also be required.

The ACT must maintain a professional and positive attitude and demeanor while upholding the principles and beliefs of the organization at all times.  All employees are required to write clearly and informatively; read and interpret standard operating procedures and protocols; be able to follow instructions, respond to management direction, and take responsibility for own actions. Individuals must be able to observe safety and security procedures, and use equipment and materials properly. 

Candidates seeking employment within this position must have a High School diploma, be at least 18 years of age, and have a minimum of one year of excellent customer service experience.  Candidates must be able to maintain a positive attitude and perform professionally in a fast paced, sometimes stressful environment. Starting salary is $10.00 per hour.  As with all positions within MHS, serving animals starts with serving people.  Successful “on-call” ACTs may be provided consideration for full-time MHS employment as similar positions become available.

ANIMAL TRANSPORT DRIVER
Location: Detroit
There is an immediate part time (24 hours per week) opening for an Animal Transport driver.  The primary focus of this position will be to transport animals between MHS adoption centers, and from transfer partners as needed.  Prior animal handling a plus however willing to train.  Candidate should possess the ability to conduct a preliminary evaluation of animals transported into the MHS and be able to administer vaccinations.  The cleaning of the cages and/or crates in the vehicle in accordance with established protocol after each trip is required to minimize the potential for disease transmission, and additional duties may be assigned as time permits. 

Responsibilities of the driver will include safely and effectively driving vehicle to designated destinations, and ensuring the vehicle is maintained properly by reporting issues immediately.  Candidate must possess an excellent driving record; have outstanding time management and interpersonal skills along with the ability to make decisions independently.  Schedule will be 3 days a week and hours are to be determined.

SHELTER SUPERVISOR
Location: Westland
The Michigan Humane Society’s Berman Center for Animal Care has an immediate opening for a Shelter Supervisor.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: the effective and efficient operation of the adoption center; supervise/provide direction to all adoption center staff; provide quality animal care, excellent customer service and a positive work environment.  This position may report directly to the Shelter Manager and Facility Director, and the Staff Supervisor will supervise/manage the Westland facility in the absence of the Shelter Manager.  This is a full time (minimum 40 hours a week) position, and the flexible schedule will include evenings and weekends.

The ideal candidate must have a professional and positive attitude; excellent interpersonal skills; strong verbal and written communication skills; the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously; and strong organizational and prioritizing skills.  They must uphold the principles and beliefs of the organization at all times; focus on solving conflicts; maintain confidentiality; listen to customers without interruption; be able to keep emotions under control; write clearly and informatively; and read and interpret standard operating procedures and protocols.  Candidates must have a High School diploma as well as six months to two years of related experience and/or training.  Previous supervisory experience is required.

CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE/ANIMAL CARE TECHNICIAN
Location: Westland
The Michigan Humane Society (MHS) has immediate openings for full-time and part-time Customer Service Representatives/Animal Care Technicians (CSR/ACT) at our Berman Center for Animal Care in Westland.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing general information and support to the public on the phone and in person as well as providing support to the adoption area by performing some of the following duties:  assisting customers with preliminary adoption paperwork and greeting customers as they enter the facility and directing them to appropriate areas, while explaining procedure and protocols.  Also, providing direct care and maintenance for all animals in the adoption center, including feeding, general husbandry and cleaning of the kennels, Shoreline cages, and all adoption center areas.  Starting salary is $8.50 per hour.  Schedule will be flexible and will include weekends and evenings.

The CSR/ACT must maintain a professional and positive attitude and uphold the principles and beliefs of the organization at all times; focus on solving conflicts; maintain confidentiality; listen to customers without interruption; keep emotions under control; write clearly and informatively; read and interpret standard operating procedures and protocols; follow instructions; respond to management direction; take responsibility for own actions; observe safety and security procedures; and use equipment and materials properly.

Candidates must have a High School diploma; six to nine months of excellent customer service experience is also required.  Candidate must be able to perform professionally in a pressure-filled environment; feed and water animals according to schedules and established protocol; clean and disinfect kennels, cages, and yard areas; maintain facility grounds to ensure all fecal matter and debris is removed; observe animals for signs of illness and advise proper personnel accordingly; hold animals during euthanasia process; bathe animals in accordance with established guidelines; exercise animals regularly to minimize the adoption center environment stress; and complete laundry and dish washing timely and effectively.

VETERINARY ASSISTANTS/VETERINARY TECHNICIANS - LICENSED AND UNLICENSED
Locations: Detroit and Westland
The Michigan Humane Society has immediate full, part-time, and contingent openings for experienced veterinary technicians and assistants.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to: outpatient services, hospitalized patient care, as well as anesthetist and surgical assistant roles.  Positions will have a flexible schedule and hours, and will include evenings and weekends.  Individuals must maintain a professional, positive attitude, and uphold the principles and beliefs of the organization at all times.

VETERINARIAN
Location: Detroit
The Michigan Humane Society (MHS) has full and part time openings for Veterinarians at our Detroit Center for Animal Care veterinary center.  Veterinarians are responsible for delivering high quality veterinary care for both internal and external clientele.  Schedule will be flexible and will include weekends.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: examining, diagnosing, prescribing, and treating outpatient and hospitalized animals; performing routine services such as administering vaccines and medications; performing sterilizations and other surgeries; performing emergency triage and stabilizing ill and injured animals; interpreting diagnostic tests; maintaining medical records; providing client education and payment information; and directing other veterinary center staff.

Candidates must hold a DVM license in the State of Michigan, hold or be eligible for a state controlled license, hold or be eligible to hold a DEA license, and hold or be eligible to hold accreditation from the USDA.  They must also have a positive work ethic and professional appearance at all times, good verbal and written communication skills, be detail oriented and organized, be able to multi-task, be able to work independently as well as part of a team, and have basic computer skills.

Pay is commensurate with experience.  Employees receive Paid Time Off, a 403(b) salary deferral plan, and employee discounts.  Full-time employees are eligible for health, dental, and prescription coverage as well as life and disability insurance.  Veterinarians also receive a continuing education allowance and a uniform allowance.

VETERINARIAN 
Locations: Rochester Hills and Westland
The Michigan Humane Society is looking for an energetic individual to join our family at our Rochester Hills Veterinary clinic.  Our varied and busy caseload provides experienced veterinarians, as well as new graduates, with the opportunity to enhance and expand their medical and surgical skills.  The open position is for an associate full-time small animal veterinarian to work 40 hours per week, flexible schedule, handling a variety of external clientele as well as in-shelter animals.  Good interpersonal skills and a positive attitude are necessary.  We are willing to train, but would prefer one-to-two years experience in an office setting.  The MHS offers a competitive wage and benefits package, including:  medical & dental insurance, paid time off, life and long & short-term disability insurance, 403(b) Thrift Plan, discounts for retail purchases and other services, professional liability insurance, continuing education allowance and generous vacation allowance and more.
