About Us

About the Michigan Humane Society
The Michigan Humane Society (MHS) is a charitable 501(c) 3 animal welfare organization and is the largest and oldest animal welfare organization in the state, caring for more than 100,000 animals each year.

EIN/Tax ID: 38-1358206

Our Mission: To end companion animal homelessness, to provide the highest quality service and compassion to the animals entrusted to our care, and to be a leader in promoting humane values.

Our Top Goal: MHS reached 100% adoption of healthy dogs and cats in 2010 and immediately set forth on a new top goal: guaranteed placement of all healthy and treatable animals within the next few years while - very importantly - remaining truly open-admission to all animals regardless of their condition.

Michigan Humane Society...

  • Cares for more than 100,000 animals each year through our life-saving programs and services
  • Is a private, nonprofit organization serving the animals and people of metro Detroit and beyond since 1877
  • Is the state's oldest and largest animal welfare organization
  • Is one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the country based on the number of animals cared for and the scope of programs and services
  • Receives no government funding and is not a United Way agency
  • Is not affiliated with any national humane organizations nor any local or regional humane societies or SPCAs; each is an independent nonprofit organization
  • Depends on the generosity of individual and corporate supporters to fund our programs and services.

Michigan Humane Society needs your support because we...

  • Provide care for more than 100,000 animals each year in southeast Michigan
  • Operate three centers for animal care in Detroit, Rochester Hills and Westland
  • Find responsible, loving homes for thousands of animals each year; MHS places more animals in new homes than the next largest shelter in our state takes in each year
  • Reunite more than 1,000 lost animals with their owners each year
  • Operate a cruelty hotline staffed by professional cruelty investigators to assist animals in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park
  • Provide emergency rescue 365 days a year for animals in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park
  • Offer low-cost feline sterilization and provide a total of more than 13,000 spay/neuter surgeries each year to reduce pet overpopulation
  • Educate approximately 10,000 children annually, teaching them respect for animals, responsible animal care and safety around animals
  • Are a driving force for greater legislative protection for animals throughout Michigan.

We are grateful for your support of our mission. For more information or to make a donation, call 1.866.MHUMANE, weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
