Adjustment Assistance with a New Pet

Bringing a new companion animal home is an exciting time.  It’s important to remember that while your human family understands exactly what’s going on - your new pet can easily be confused or even frightened.

To help your furry family member adjust, set rules and encourage everyone to stick to them.  Regardless of your pet’s age, the first 14 to 21 days in your home are the most important for him to learn the rules and schedules of his new household.  Consider things like: will he be allowed on the furniture, where will his potty area be, where will he sleep, where will he be when the family eats dinner, etc.?

For additional assistance in setting and keeping household rules contact the Michigan Humane Society Behavior Help Line at 248-650-0127 and leave a message. A qualified trainer will return your call.
