Cats in Cars
Has it happened to you … you’re driving your cat to the vet and endure a non-stop chorus of meows and howls. A car ride was clearly not your cat’s favorite thing and as a result, you only took her in the car when you absolutely had to - which was to the vet. So, she never learned to like the car any better. So what can you do? Try placing her (in her cat carrier) in the car in the driveway without even starting the car and feed her some tasty treats. After just a few minutes, take her out of the car and return her to the house (no more treats - special treats are only for "in the car"). When you can sit in the car for 15 minutes or so without any howling, start the car and back in and out of the driveway. If that went well, drive around the block, treating her occasionally and always ending up back at home. As soon that’s mastered, slowly offer fewer treats for our trips around the block. In no time you may have had a cat who enjoys car rides!
