Teach Your Dog to Walk on a Leash

For some of us, walking with our dogs nicely on a leash can be challenging to say the least.  The MOST important thing to remember when training your dog to walk nicely is: Don’t Try Too Much Too Soon.

It is better to teach your dog to walk politely in your house, then in your back yard, then in front of your house, before you attempt to walk the neighborhood.  So yes, hook your dog’s leash on in the house and practice walking nicely from room to room, this way and that, giving him a little treat every once in a while when he is at your side.

When he’s excellent indoors, take him to the back yard and practice there.  If he gets too distracted go back inside for another few days.  Avoid taking him to highly distracting places before he’s ready.  If you take baby steps, you’ll both be happier and doing a pleasant 5 mile trek before you know it.
