Samantha's Road to Recovery
Samantha was hit by a car and her leg was severely swollen and shattered

It started like so many of these stories do – with a screeching of tires, a shuddering impact, and the quiet whimpering of a dog whose life suddenly was in great danger.

The car had hit Samantha near her front left leg, shattering the bones beyond the skill of any surgeon. When MHS’ Emergency Rescue team found this 8-month-old Labrador/Pit Bull Terrier mix on the streets of Detroit, she was doing all she could to not put weight on her injured front leg.

Every step must have been absolutely agony for this sweet 8-month-old girl – not even fully-grown yet, facing a crushed leg and perhaps a life-threatening infection – or worse.

After being examined by MHS veterinarians, the decision was made that in order to save her life, her leg would have to be amputated.

Her recovery was slow. For treatable animals like Samantha, having the assistance of a foster family – an MHS In-Home Hero – is absolutely critical.
