MHS Volunteers: 135 Years of Compassion In Action
A History of Giving From the Heart

For 135 years, volunteers have helped the Michigan Humane Society and its predeces-sor organizations change animal lives. Their efforts are priceless gifts to the animals, repaid daily in tail wags, purrs and the expressions of happy adopters.

Long before anyone was on staff at MHS, compassionate volunteers were making a difference for animals in the city of Detroit. It started with Arthur Curtis, who came to the aid of abused horses on the Society’s behalf. His efforts showed that even one person, committed to a cause, could make a tremendous difference. He was the state’s first Animal Cop and later became the Society’s first paid employee. Today, his legacy lives on in the efforts of 1,900 remarkable MHS volunteers, several of whom have volunteered with MHS for five, 10 or even 20-plus years.

“Throughout our history, volunteers have played a crucial role in most every Michigan Humane Society endeavor, generously donating their time, unique skills and hard work to help the animals,” says Cal Morgan, MHS president and CEO. “They truly expand the reach of what we can accomplish. Without them, MHS would not be the organization we are today.”

In 2011, more than 50,000 volunteer hours were donated to the MHS care services that reach more than 100,000 animals each year.

“MHS appreciates every volunteer who shares their gifts of time and talent with us,” says Jamahl Scott, MHS volunteer programs manager. “We love working alongside these special men and women, and truly appreciate their contributions 365 days a year in helping MHS save lives.”
