Free Pit Bull Spay/Neuter Program - Michigan Humane Society Veterinarians

Free Pit Bull Spay/Neuter Program

Notice – Due to overwhelming response this program is on hiatus until such time that we are able to fulfill our current requests with the resources available. Please call 866-MHUMANE for further information.

MHS is partnering with a number of local humane organizations to offer a limited number of pit bull sterilization certificates that can be redeemed at one of MHS’ three veterinary centers, in Detroit, Rochester Hills and Westland.

The certificates are part of MHS’ commitment to reducing pet overpopulation through preventative measures like education and sterilization.

Far too many Pit Bull-type dogs are entering shelters across the country, and not enough are able to find the home they deserve. Though many pit bull-type dogs make wonderful pets, breed bans, insurance exclusions and misconceptions about the breed result in it often taking longer for Pit Bull-type dogs to find a home.

By offering these spay/neuter certificates at no charge to pet owners, we hope to make a significant reduction in the numbers of Pit Bull-type dogs that humane organizations across metro Detroit are receiving every day.

Each sterilization certificate covers the cost of spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccination for animals four months and older, DHLPP (distemper) vaccination, heartworm testing, pre-surgical blood work for animals five years and older, and pain medication.

The total cost of these services would typically range between $220 and $335. There are no pet owner eligibility restrictions based on income, residential, or any other criteria, in order to receive a certificate.  However, your pet must meet the program’s breed criteria.

Dogs covered under this program must be a Pit Bull-type dog, which include the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Cane Corso and Presa Canario.

If visual verification cannot be made by the individual issuing the certificate, the final decision of breed approval will be determined by the MHS veterinarian or veterinary technician at the time of the sterilization appointment.
