Wellness Exams
A wellness exam is an important part of preventive health care for pets in all stages of life, from puppies and kittens, to senior pets. Even if your pet seems healthy, a wellness exam is a good way to detect changes, such as weight gain or loss, dental disease, or other subtle changes that may not be evident at home.

For any pet, especially senior pets, a wellness exam is a good way to detect early onset of disease. Early diagnosis and treatment of diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, can greatly improve the overall health, well-being, quality of life and longevity of your pet.

Our wellness exams include a complete physical examination, which is a nose-to-tail inspection for any abnormalities. Our veterinarians and staff may use special equipment, including a stethoscope to listen to the heart and lungs, an otoscope to view the inside of the ears, and an ophthalmoscope to examine the eyes. Your veterinarian will also examine your pet’s body for lumps and bumps. Recording your pet’s weight is also an important part of the exam, as weight changes can indicate potential problems.

Additionally, part of the exam may include bloodwork, a fecal test, a heartworm test, or x rays to check for any issues. These options will all be part of what is discussed with you during your visit and wellness exam.

Preventive Care

Our veterinarians can help design a preventive care program for each of your pets. Prevention is KEY to keeping your pet healthy and identifying problems early. Knowing what your pet needs can be SIMPLE. SIMPLE is an acronym for Spay/neuter, IMmunizations for cats/dogs, Parasite prevention, Life stage care like dentistry, and a yearly veterinary Exam. Call to make an appointment today with one of our veterinarians. We also offer package pricing for our wellness care.

Spaying or neutering is one of the most important things you can do for your pet. There are many benefits to having your pet sterilized, such as:

  • Health benefits
  • Preventing unwanted behaviors
  • Positive effects on your pet’s personality
  • Helping control pet overpopulation

Please spay/neuter!

We offer low-cost spay/neuter services. We also offer spay/neuter services for rabbits.

Dental Care
The most common disease in companion animals is periodontal (gum) disease, affecting at least 70% of dogs and cats over five years of age.

Puppies and kittens aren’t born with dental disease – it’s up to you to take care of their oral health. Pets need regular dental cleanings throughout their life to help prevent dental disease. Proper dental care, starting at a young age, can also help prevent health issues, such as heart or kidney disease, from appearing as the pet ages.

At the Michigan Humane veterinary centers, we will meet with you to discuss the best dental plan for your pet based on lifestyle, age and breed. That plan will most likely include a combination of at-home dental care, diet, and routine dental cleanings.

Dental cleanings are performed under general anesthesia.

In-House Diagnostics
Whether for routine wellness and preventive care, or for an urgent, life-threatening medical emergency, our in-house diagnostics center allows us to provide you with quick and timely evaluations followed by an immediate response to your pet’s medical needs. Our diagnostic capabilities include annual heartworm testing, intestinal parasite screening and general wellness blood work, to more comprehensive blood work for sick or injured pets. Also, using state-of-the-art equipment, we can perform blood pressure screenings and glaucoma tests.
Puppy and Kitten Care
Do you have a new puppy or kitten? Congratulations on this addition to your family! One of the first things you should do when you bring your new pet home is to introduce him or her to us, your veterinary health care team. Puppy and kitten visits offer a unique opportunity to get you and your new pet off on the right foot!

Your puppy or kitten visit will include a full nose-to-tail physical examination. We will look for any signs of illness and make sure that your new pet is in good health.

Do you have questions about nutrition, training, vaccinations, grooming, parasite protection, or overall health? What about tips for introducing your new pet to other pets and family members?

Even if you are an experienced pet owner and have had puppies or kittens before, each pet is unique and offers an opportunity to learn something new. We welcome your questions and look forward to addressing any concerns you may have. The more educated you are about your pet, the better you will be able to care for him or her, so we strive to offer you all the support you need.

Puppy and kitten wellness visits also present an opportunity to discuss your new pet’s recommended vaccine schedule and the best plan for parasite testing, treatment, and prevention. Our doctors and other staff members are well educated and experienced with veterinary vaccines and parasite control, and our goal is to give you the best advice for your puppy or kitten. We will review your pet’s vaccine and deworming schedule (if applicable), and discuss the best plan for going forward: so don’t forget to bring any records that you have received.

We will work hard to help you understand your pet’s health considerations and we encourage you to be involved in decisions regarding your pet’s health care. Puppy and kitten visits are an excellent way to get your new pet started on the road to a happy and healthy life. Let’s take these important first steps together!

Senior Care
Did you know that pets age faster than people and can be considered “seniors” at around seven years of age? Just as our health care needs change as we age, your pet’s healthcare needs change, too. Nutritional needs, exercise habits, and many aspects of your pet’s daily routine can change as your pet ages. But how can you tell the difference between “normal” aging and a medical problem? As in humans, some health issues that affect older pets can begin with very subtle changes that may go unnoticed until the problem becomes more serious.

Regular wellness visits are important for every stage of your pet’s life, so don’t forget to keep your senior pet’s scheduled wellness appointments. The best way to help protect your pet as he or she ages is to understand the aging process in pets. We understand that process and can help you help your pet.

Even if your senior pet is already being treated for a medical condition, treatment recommendations can change as a condition progresses. Sometimes medication dosages need to be adjusted, or medication may need to be changed.

Routine wellness blood work and other routine diagnostic testing are important for senior pets because these tests enable us to evaluate how your pet’s health is either responding to current management strategies or changing with age.

Your senior pet’s wellness exam is also your chance to have us address any concerns about your pet. We welcome your questions and encourage you to be actively involved in decisions regarding your pet’s health care.

Older pets make wonderful companions, and thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, pets are living longer than ever. You are an important ally in your senior pet’s health care. We are here to help ensure that your pet is safe and happy throughout the “golden years.”

Referral Services
Sometimes your pet may have a medical or surgical condition that requires special expertise, ormay need special equipment not used by a family practice veterinarian. In these cases, we may refer you to a veterinary specialist in the area. This is like getting a second opinion from a specialist, providing us with more detailed information about your pet’s condition to make the best recommendation for his or her treatment. After your visit with the referral practice, they will send us a visit summary that we will review and add to your medical record here at Michigan Humane. These referral practices serve as an extension of our commitment to you to provide the best healthcare possible for your pet.
